Hi Fred,

I've seen this story before in the Guinness World Record Book. I have the 2003 and 2007 copies, the story features in both:

As you can see, the figures have been exaggerated just a bit in the second article!

980 of 1000 is a staggering number of dead due to crocodiles all the same.

OMG! What a horrible way to go! This is comparable to the ordeal of the crew of the USS Indianapolis.

You know, maybe it is just me but after the first, say 500 guys got eaten by crocs, I think someone would have had a sit down and thought of another option...

Like suicide...

I think that the death toll due to crocodiles is quite an exaggeration. I can imagine that many soldiers seeing how hopeless their situation was would rather commit suicide than be attacked by a croc.
