I'm finishing my basement and included in that is a hobby room. I have the flexability to get the lighting right from day one. I plan to have
1) Florescent tubes on the celing, one bank of 2.
2) Direct lighting over the workbench, either halogen or LED
3) Spray booth lit with two CFL
What have you done in your work area. Can you see any pitfalls with my design?

How big is the room?? Use the "daylight" series bulbs for as many of the fixtures as you can.

I would add one other light to your workbench, possably two. The lights I would add are adjustable lights. I have two over my bench. One has just florescent and the other has three small florscent bulbs and has a magnafying lense. The light with the lense comes in handy for some close work.
