One that I liked was "Chickenhawk". About a helicopter pilot during the war.

Well that depends on what area you want to read about Vietnam.Do you want to read about the Air Force's war,the Navy's,the Marines air and or ground,or the multiple Army roles.

For the Air Force I suggest either Ken Bell's 100 Missions North;both of Jack Broughtons books,Thud Ridge and Going Downtown;G.I. Basel's Pak Six;or a new one which I have been unable to read yet which is When Thunder Rolled by Ed Rasimus.

Dont know much about Navy or Marine books.

Army books, well thats another story. If its helicopters anything about the Cav is just awesome. You definatly want to read those books.Havent read alot about infantry though so I really cant help you out there.

I second m1garand's suggestion of 'Chickenhawks'. I have read it several times.

I think the operative word was "novel" Flight of the Intruder by Coonts is great, he got such a good response, he wrote a whole slew of books based on the main character Jake Grafton. Haven't heard about to many more, a lot of the movies like Deer Hunter and Apocolypse Now are based on novels I think.

First post here.

Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson is a great read in my opinion. it focuses on Carlos Hathcock and the fledgling sniper program back in the 60's. Goes into pretty good detail about some of Hathcock's most famous kills too.

I was rather fond of "A Rumor of War" by Philip Caputo.

'Phantoms of the Jungle' - can't remember the author but this is THE book on the SAS's involvement in Vietnam.
'Uncertain Fate' - Graham J. Brammer - another great book about the Australian SAS in Vietnam.
'Crossfire - An Australian Recon Unit in Vietnam' - Peter Haran/Robert Kearney
'The Battle of Coral' - 'The Battle of Long Tan' - Lex McAulay - two books about the great battles involving Australian Infantry in Vietnam by the pre-eminant Australian military historian.

James C. Donahue's Book "No Greater Love" is a fantastic book about a firefight with the Mobile guerrilla force. He also has 2 other books I am aware of called the "Mobile Guerrilla Force" and "Blackjack33". "blackjack 34" is his "no greater love" retitled in the softcover version. All are true stories of his actions in Vietnam.

Dead Center, Silent Warrior, and Marine Rifleman are three very good choices.
Dead Center was a very easy read. The author did'nt pull any punches, he just told it like it was.
