When I got my new camera I consulted a friend who is a pro photographer. He reckoned to get the best canon or nikon in my budget as they have the best optics, this he claims is more important than the megapixels. I got a canon powershot, and I'm quite happy with it. It has pretty good automatic settings and you can also play about with different exposure and aperture settings too. I rarely need to but it can be useful esp if you want to do some depth of field tricks with close ups.
Would recommend the canon.
