I read this the other day and thought it was worth sharing:

It is the soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion

It is the soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us the freedom of the press

It is the soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech

It is the soldier, not the campus organiser
Who has given us freedom to protest

It is the soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial

It is the soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote

It is the soldier who salutes the flag
Who serves by the flag,
And whose coffin is beneath the flag
Who allows the protester to burn the flag

Cheers

Found a little bit more at: http://www.juntosociety.com/military/rp_wiav_011003.htm.

"What Is A Vet? Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem.

You can't tell a vet just by looking.

What is a vet?

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

Remember November 11th is Veterans Day

"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."

Father Denis Edward O'Brien
USMC"

The veteran is that exhausted, cold, wet, hungry, homesick, little son (or daughter) in some strange land to keep the wolf from the door for little money, no appreciation ( except from his/her buddy) with only a hope of going home in one piece when the politicians promised them in hopes of not having to repeat the duty; but willing to do it again so that their kids do not have to.

This I have done for the first half of my adult life, so that I can have a family in my senior years now that my body can no longer sustain "humpin a ruck" for days on end.

Sadly oh so true but is'nt it sad that our governments arn't there to support us when we are put out to pasture and our wounds start to ache and we require assistance. It should be automatic but sadly we are in combat again, sadly with the country that we have fought for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Mike

You are spot on, Mike. May God hold all of them in the palm of His hand, safe from the dark, in the peace they earned. thanks to all of them...soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines (all both men and women).

Here it is, the Canadian Version:

Whether regular or a resevist, a veteran is someone who, at one point in their life, signed a blank cheque made Payable to the People Of Canada, for an amount up to, and including the loss of his or her life.

How true those words are and only he who understands the meaning need not say any more as we are the only ones who do.

It kind of chokes you and brings a little tear to your eyes. Because it is so true. I had 22 years when I retired in 1999. I want to thank all active duty soldiers, airmen, seamen, and marines. Plus all of the retired and former military. For continuing to defend this country and all others. The only other thing that will bring a tear to my eyes is the sound of taps. Remember Memorial Day is coming up, so thank you to all of our servicemen, women, and veterans.

All too true. A vet is someone who has done what had to be done, that no one wished he had to do. He also hopes his kids don't have to do what he had to.

Someone always has to put their body in harm's way to protect their country, but the cost is so high.

Maybe someday that will change, but not now.
