Hi there

Looking to try and scratch build a 1/24 Bedford MJ or MK around a very old plastic kid's toy cab of a 1/24 Bedford TJ by Regal Toys. The toy is very basic but a very good repro of the curvs and lines of this great old workhorse. Trying to gather up information, dimensions and detail pics to make a start on it.

Already building a 1/24 DAF DROPS with King trailer to go along with this and pics of the DAF are posted.

Any help, advice etc would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there

Has anyone got any good sources for basic dimensions and detailing for any of the Bedford MK or MJ (GS, Radio, G10 stores, UBRE, etc.

Would love to transform this kids toy into a proper workhorse.

Hope to hear from you.

Here's some basic dimensions for the MK:
Load Area: 4.28 x 2.01
Length: 6.579
Width: 2.489
Height: (cab) 2.501
( Tarpaulin) 3.404
Ground Clearance: 0.343
Track: (front) 2.05
(rear) 2.03
Wheelbase: 3.962
Angle of approach/departure: 41/38 degree
Suspension: semi-elliptical springs with telescopic hydraulic double action shock absorbers
Tyres: 12.00 x 20
Info from Jane's Military Vehicles and Ground Support Equipment.

Just a suggestion but you might want to consider casting the cab before messing about with it, that way you can have 'back-up's' if things don't work out the first time.

Best of luck with the project.

Casper/BARV

Thanks for that!!!!!!!!!! Greatly appreciated. I will have to research how to cast aswell as there is the undercut of the step on the mud guards to consider. I presume my casting medium will be hard for the inside surface of the cab and flexible for the exterior so that I can peel the original out of the mould.

Not cast anything bigger than the load handling equipment so far, and that was done by building my originals in balsa. I cast them in a bed of silocon from simple mastic gun application in a bed of plasticene. Was very rough and ready and feel they are a bit too simplistic. Did not get a good finish from the resin mix either. Want to try a different method.

Not really got a clue about casting the cab of the Bedford and materials.

Hi ya Nige and BARV,
Yer, I'm still alive and kicking (just )
Nige if you want to contact via PM, I can take ya thru a step by step 2-piece compression mold casting technique that I use (I'm too lazy to load the pic's onto Photobucket etc etc),
no fancy vacuum pumps and that other BS that so many think are essential for casting, I use the 'KISS' system.
That undercut works to your advantage when laying up the mold.
Catch ya later.

Thanks for the access to your DROPS pics, greatly appreciated. Did you do a build artical on the american drops build you did. That is the bridge building kit on flat rack system you had at Perth isn't it. Superb!

Are you intending to do a DAF or Foden DROPS at some time in the future. 1/35? How do I give you access to the pics I have built up of the real DAF I have built up. Just in case you need more reference. I made a video of the DROPs and KING at our local military day show. It might be a bit long to upload to photobucket though.

I have only built up a few pics of the Bedford so far and no video. Those dimensions from Casper will really help. Need to ambush an MK driver as he comes out of our TA centre sometime to get some more pics I think. What do you think? Spike strips?

Cheers again

Hey Casper

Thanks for that side view pic of the GS version. That and your dimensions are a great start. Am going to try to get down the TA centre and see if I can get permission to look around and snap some pics off of the Bedfords lined up inside.

The one with the fairground centre seating arrangement looks appealing with its four point harnesses and middle roll bar. Changed days from bouncing about on the timber bench seating or on the bare floor. Aaaaaaaah Health and Safety!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Casper

Casper

When I printed off that side view to A4 paper and checked it from your earlier size list, I only need to enlarge the pic by 8% to get the 1/24. Worked a treat on the photocopier.

Cheers!!! Another one I owe you!

Nige - It's good to know I can be of use (sometimes ).
I'll have a troll thru my bits'n'pieces and see if I have any parts of use.

Had a looksie in my spares box but alas there was nothing of use (yet).
I'm still playing with the 1/24th scale Bedford RL, can't remember if they use similar diffs and transfer case .

Hi Rodger

I would think they would be close if not the same. I wouldn't think they would change that much since they are so closely related. I will try to see if the friend I know can get his hands on chassis drawings. How far are you on with your RL.

Are you using a KFS resin cab or are your doing your own? Any pics of your build.

Shed to get a clear out tomorrow to get working on the trucks Sunday.

Hi Casper

I have trawled the web sites with bedford, AWD and military and have not come across any chassis pics or drawings for either M or R series. Only pics I find seem to have bodies on.

This pic shows the wheel and tyre (bar type) arrangements very well so I can make a stab at trying your technique. I will need to build up the lip on the cab above the radiator air intake before I mold the cab. The toy has a line I can use as the start on either side but is totally flat across the full front. Will try building up withthin layers of plasticard then sand back down.

Nige,
Hopefully I'll get up to the lake this week and check out an MK thats up there and compare with the RL info , I've got heaps of RL photos and dimensions (had one parked on the drive for a few weeks so I could get dimensions etc ). My version is 100% scratch but has been consigned to the recycling box when I found out about The Partsbox resin release - no use building something when people are going to assume its a resin conversion kit, not my 'style'.
Catch ya later.

Hi Casper

Would have loved to see how you got the curves sorted on that. Very complicated I would have thought.
