Hi first time at the scratch builders forum, figured you'd know about Mr.Surfacer. Can some one explain what it is for other than using 500 to airbrush rough surfaces on armor step areas. What is it's primary intended use, what do you thin it with , can you build up layers with it, anything would help.
Thanks
Bill

I'd equate it to a paint with putty in it. It's kind of like a auto body sandable primer.

500 is the thickest 1200 bieng the thinnest.

You can use the Mr. Thinner or Laquer thinner for thinner and cleanup.

MAtt
Thanks again for coming to the rescue. I read the article on the up armored HMMWV in Fine Scale Modeler and it mentioned gap filling with Mr.Surfacer. I have soem 1000 and I tried it on a seam and it really didn't see like a gap filler but it makes sense if it comes in a thicker form.
Thanks
Bill

I've heard there has been a lot of trouble actually stocking Mr Surfacer lately, something about it's chemicals being bad for importation. I had to find some of my older stuff to actually have some to use. =[

For gap filling, it's best to cover once, sand smooth, cover again, sand smooth and so on until it's fully filled.

it's more the lack of labeling in English..................... Tamiya Extra thin cememt was hard to find for awhile because of the lack of English on the label.

Ordered mine from Luckymodel

Just as a side note, though it is lacquer based, it seems that it's not terribly aggressive towards styrene - ie. it won't melt the surface of your models. (though I suspect that if you thin or mix it with lacquer thinners, it will).

It cleans up well with denatured alcohol too (or methylated spirits here in Australia ie. appr. 95% ethanol).

If you are finding it hard to get hold of Mr Surfacer, an alternative product is Tamiya Liquid Surface Primer, which is, as far as I am aware, almost identical to the finer grade Mr Surfacer.
