Hi folks,
I'm building a coal crane at the moment and wondered in what fashion the cable would be attatched to the winch drum. DId these have a central or side fixing for the wire?
Never seen one unwound so to speak.
Thanks
Al

Sorry Alan I have just seen this.
I'm not sure about the fixing, there are probably many ways in which the cable could be fixed, including internally. However it was done it would have to be able to stand the Safe working load of the crane, much the same as the weakest link would be the shakle pin. One thing that I do know is that the cable came off the drum, over or under, depending on which way it layed. (imagine holding the cable in your hand, pointing away from you, it could be layed (wound) clockwise or anti clockwise. The bit I'm struggling to remember, as I last taught this, half a millenium ago is which way went how. I do believe though that I might be correct in suggesting that a clockwise layed rope would come off the top of the drum. The reason for this is that it stopped the rope twisting
I would also assume that this is totally irrelivent info as know one (but me would know this
Just ask if the is anything more that you would like to know about SWR (Steel Wire Rope)
Mal Having flash backs to teaching "SWR and fixings" to RE recruits. Thanks for bringing back the memories

Chances are it's fixed off to one side... as to Which.... it Should wind up whichever way it's "forced" to go when winding.......

Hi , in all the cranes I have worked on in 37 years in heavy industry , the end of the winch cable that is att to the drum , goes through a hole next to the side plate and is clamped on the inside , this is to ensure that the turns of cable as the winch pays out are uniform and have no kinks hope it helps cheers ian

Some are done thru the side wall of the drum, others have a hole in the drum (either way it's off to one side, so that the cable will spool across the drum.
Just search "winch cable attachement" on google for pics.
