Hi all
Just thought I'd share pics of my rendition of the Raising of the flag on Iwo Jima.

The Figures are Airfix US Marine Multipose , with most of the arms from the US Army kit as most of the Marines kit have short sleeve shirts.
Although the famous picture shows the marines without packs on I decided to include them as I like the look better.
Not quite finished yet as I'm attempting to do their faces next and touch up other parts I've missed (funny what you see in pics)
Hope you like it .

Looks good Steve, but after today, you'll have to re-title it to Iwo Toe, as Iwo Jima no longer exist.

Hi guys

Relax Tim Iwo is still there. The Japanese Goverment the other day decided to allow the residents of Iwo to go back to calling the island its original name. Which was Iwo Toe. Its still the same black volcanic rock of U.S.Marine fame. It just has a new, aah old name.

Nicely done and creative use of these kits.

You need to replace the flag. You have a 50 star flag that didn'r come into being until 1960, fully 15 years after the event you're depicting. You need a 48 star flag and here it is:.

Note also the angle of the flag on the pole:

Save it and import it to Word and resize it like you would any clip art. Print it on white paper at high resolution. Cut it out with a straight edge and #11 blade. Fold it sharply between the cantons and apply a little thinned white glue to the unprinted side. Now carefully fold it over to make it two sides. The papre will be sooft from the moisture so you can get some natural folds in place. Tie it to the pole, which was a piece of pipe the Marines found on the mountain. The pole should not go through the flag.

It was fresh, so there shouldn't be any shredding.

Note in the picture, none of the men are wearing backpacks.

The guy furthest from the flag is Ira Hayes. In the book, Flags of our Fathers, it was noted that he was easily recognized by how he wore his poncho through his belt.

PULL YER NECK IN
...1-----The model was explained as being not finished (see post)
2----- He knows about the packs --(see post)
3----- Due to limited resources---flag known to be incorrect
4------Model made to be shown at club --so not 100% finished
5------I don't think He needs a lesson in the use of scalpels
6------He is not a historian --but put a fair bit of time and effort into researching this --with limited resources
7------Scrounged and saved to find figures to suit
8------Seen another one lately???
9 -----Negativity is a great thing when you are giving it out
I think--and the guys in the club agreed(2nd place in monthly comp)--- different and interesting subject -----ambitious for a modeler who has only been back on the bench (board)for a few months ...but carried off well
So AL.....I think that you have been rather harsh with the timbre of your post...we are not all(supposedly ) "great"model makers........so give the guy a break --a p-m would have been better than a "put-down"on forum
I LIKE IT
---------and he's my son....and so gets away with less than most when it comes to models-------
Appology ??????

PS....An old maxim I used to display ---------

Models are made for ENJOYMENT----NOT for the self gratificaion of RIVET COUNTERS
------still holds true!!!!

Nice diorama Steve Jnr.

Steve Snr, I have to say that I don't see anything in Al's post that he needs to apologise for. He started by saying

Quoted Text

Nicely done and creative use of these kits.

and then he offered constructive criticism and advice. I don't see anything harsh or negative. Maybe it comes across that way because Al didn't fill his post up with smileys but hey, some people don't use them. I like the diorama but again I see nothing for Al to apologise for.

Steve, senior, if you found it harsh, I'm sorry you did it certainly was not intended as harsh. But I went to the effort to download and create a two sided flag for him and posted it so he could get this more accurate, with instructions to get a more realilstic drape to the flag. I found the picture of the event he's depicting and put it right there as a reference again, so he can get it more accurate.
In my many years inn this hobby, I've had many people offer me assitance to get better at what I do. I was trying to pass some of that learning on. Consider my neck stuck in. And lest there be any more of my harshness, I've put you both on ignore. You are the first to achieve that status here.

Al...... I thank you for the effort to post the "flag" for him --but I felt that the style of reply was a bit of a "pat on the head "--"well done little man"
**** To one and all I can only say my post was what I felt .****
Me ---I have been ignored for a long time ---so I am not concerned as I have built many "on-line " models and I am well used to not having many replies ..... BUT!!! ......I am surprised that sas007 will now be ignored by you AL .......or anyone on here would ignore a fellow modeler----- what has he done to offend you ????
I do not expect ,and do not require an answer as I have said my bit and "high-jacked "this post ..not intended --and appologies to sas007
END
aye

Al - thanks for the flag but...

1 - My rendition (therefore packs on figures)
2 - How are you supposed to work out the angle of the flagpole ?
3 - Conceived and built in 2 1/2 weeks (1-2 hours at night,2-3 weekends)
4 - Only had the picture to work with.
5 - Limited resources
6 - It's quite hard to see how many stars are on flag

As i've said in other forums I build for myself and don't care if somethings not the right colour ,shade, shape, size etc. so I'm happy with the way it has come out so far.

SAS007

P.S. Apology from Barv for hi-jack accepted
