Greetings culture lovers

A couple days ago,I started reading a paperback called "A Perfect Hell" It's the true story of the Black Devils, the forefathers of the Special Forces The author is John Nadler Published by Ballantine Books

A good read so far It is vastly different in telling the story about this unit that waht is portrayed in the movie The Devil's Brigade starring William Holden

Yes it is a combined American and Canadian unit that trained in Montana The only character that somewhat matched to the book from the movie was the hand to hand combat instructor named O'Neill In the book,he was a former cop in Shanghai He was at first,an instructor with the OSS

Also,Italy wasn't their first combat experience They were first sent to the Aluetian islands off the coast of Alaska to battle the Japanese However, when they got to their assigned area, the Japanese troops had left That's when they were sent to Italy

They were originally formed and trained to go to Norway Even the movie makes reference to that However, that fell through Also,if I am reading this book right, the M29 Weasel was originally designed for this unit

If you'd like to read a good book about this unit, then get this book Very informative

Chad,
Sounds like a good read.
I still like the movie even if they took the usual liberties with the actual history of the unit.
It's what we've all come to expect from Hollywood, although some have been better recently about getting the scripts closer to the truth.
Thanks for sharing.

Glad you liked the review Gary I like the movie as well A good action flick In the book, there was a major who liked snakes But in the movie, the American major didn't like snakes However,he collected them to get over his fear of them
