Dealing with Seams

So, as we’ve seen the first step in dealing with seams is to ensure that the parts will fit together in the best way they can. Putty, or filler, should be used only as a last resort. Now we’ll see how to join the parts to help eliminate the seams. Let’s say we’re building an aircraft kit for this article but all of the techniques discussed will work for any type of model kit.

All of the interior work is done and mounted into its proper place. Dry fit the two halves together. Look to see if there are any problem areas. One thing to look for is if the interior parts are aligned with any locators on the opposite side (I once was working on a P-47 and had a wonderful fit along the fuselage seam. After it had dried I noticed I’d forgot to put the cockpit in!). There are 4 types of cement available for modelers.

1. Liquid cement
- Applied along the seam with a brush it melts the plastic together
2. Tube cement
- Does the same as the liquid only thicker and longer to dry. In my opinion the strongest bond.
3. Super Glue
- Good for attaching small parts or reinforcing joints.
4. White Glue “Elmers”
- Used for canopies, may sometimes be used to fill gaps.

You should have all of these types of glue at your disposal.

I noticed that in this article the model you were showing was a TBD Devastator (pretty sure from Revell, correct?). I just finished a TBD and one thing I noticed is the lack of photographic references available (mainly as there is no single TBD left in the world, save for 2 underwater wrecks). If you need any info, I'll be happy to share what I have. Jeff [email protected]
