TamiyaCon IX - A Show Report

The sun wins "Best California Day"

The next morning I drove the hour or so back south to Aliso Viejo. The day was MUCH different. Sunny and blue skies. Temperature: 65-70 degrees. A perfect California day. And it showed as there were many more people at the show. The model display rooms were filled with more new entries. I started snapping pictures!

At this point I found the Aircraft and Naval room. There were some excellent ship kits present. This destroyer dio was amazing. There were also several very nice P-51's that caught my eye. I love those "Cadilacs of the Skies".

Near the back of the facility there was the presentation tent and RC area. While this was primarily a "modeling" event, the RC cars and tanks were a popular attraction. Some of the cars really moved around this race track.

The presentation tent was home to past winners that held modeling seminars. Sgt. Mummey also held his M1 Tank seminar at this location. It was very informative and he recounted several interesting stories from recent actions in Iraq and the prior Gulf War.

Since the weather was much better I was able to take some good photos of the AFV vehicles on display. I was even able to climb up into the M3 Halftrack to shoot them. Now if only they would let me drive the Stewart!

The day eventually drew to a close. The winners were announced at the presentation tent. Gino (HeavyArty) was very pleased to win the Director's Choice award. "I'm going to Japan!" was heard a few times.

On the way home I did manage to visit Jon at Mission Models for a few minutes. His shop was well supplied with all manner of after-market products and the like. He was kind enough to send me on my way with deli sandwiches and a brownie which was all the dinner I needed for the drive home (Thanks again Jon).

All in all it was a very fun show and I would highly recommend it. Who knows maybe next year I will get the nerve to introduce myself to Mr. Tamiya (I did take his photo with Mark Bannerman though).

I started building models in 1971 when I was 6. My first model was a 1/32 P-40 Warhawk. Revell I believe. From there I moved onto the standard cars, Apollo spacecraft, and other kid orientated kits. I don't know what got me started on Armor. I must have seen a Monogram tank kit one day and said "Mom...

Nice one Jim! Looks like a lot of fun! Did they really have an RC mock battle in that sandbox? The buildings look nice. Would have been very cool to see AFVs running around in there. Thanks for sharing!

John, Yeah I couldn't get a really good view but I think the German tanks were whooping up on the poor Americans. They had some kind of hit system where the more hits the slower the tank responded. Kinda neat. Still it seems a bit unfair that you can never get really surprised since you have a 360 degree view of the battlefield. Jim

They most likely used Tamiya's own hit system that's compatible with their RC kits.

Wexman, Thanks for providing such a great model to photograph! I thought it was one of the nicest modern pieces at the show. Cheers, Jim
