SCAHMS 2004 - A First Timers Report

There were 8 or so vendors at the show. I immediately locked my radar in on Monroe Perdu as I have exchanged emails with the owner Mike Bishop in the past. We talked for quite a bit over several different occasions about a variety of topics. For those unfamiliar with MP, Mike designs, sculpts and creates diorama set pieces that are very unique in the marketplace. His attention to detail is very evident in his products. MP’s most recent release is called “New Paint” (shown at right) . We will be doing a full review and write up on this piece so look for that soon.

A number of other vendors were on hand. There was R&K Productions, a distributor that carries the full line of Vallejo paints (soon to expand to 120 colors!) and also publishes Historical Miniature Magazine. Also there was Herb Deeks who had a new 1/72 scale WWII Russian ship on display. The Company of Military Historians was also in attendance with information about their publication, Military Collector & Historian. There were several other retailers and specialty vendors at the show as well.

 

 

Awards
As with most scale miniature hobby shows there are a lot of awards. It is nice to see people getting recognized for the hard work they obviously put into all the entries. As a first-time visitor to the show I must congratulate Diego Ruina (who I was teasing earlier) for the truly amazing number of awards he won that day. I lost count but my guess would be in the 10-15 range. His work was certainly notable. Many of the Gold winners are noted in the photos already featured in this article. I should note that Charles Reading won both a bronze and a silver for his entries. Dave Connoly also won a bronze. The following won gold awards; Mike McFadden (2 golds), Young Won (2 golds), Diego Ruina, Doug Cohen, Andrew Myers, and one other person whose name I could not discern but they made the wonderful Celtic Standard Bearer.

The Best of Show award went to Mike Blank for his Tannenberg – 1410. Mike was immediately back to receive the Masters Award for 2004.

I'll echo these comments, your report on the show was also first-class.... Being a little jaded with modelling at the moment, these photos have served to give me a nice little burst of enthusiasm.... For those that haven't seen them yet, these two pics are for me breathtaking....Thanks again, Jim and this......
