Hello everyone I have been lurking on this sight for some time and finally decided to join up.
I used TankSGT as a call sign because I was one. I finished my military career as a Tank Platoon Sergeant in the US Army National Guard. I served on M551A1s, M60A1s,M60A3s,M48A5sand M1s. I love building armor kits and strive for realistic over artistic models. I'll be glad to answer any questions on those tanks I can. I also build the occasional plane and ship.
This looks like a great site and I'm happy to to have joined.

Perhaps you would lend your expertise in weathering of exposed metal on armor? Here's a recent discussion. If I am full of beans, please correct me.:

Hi all,I thought it about time I introduced myself too.
I'm 38,single (for any model building ladies out there!)and have been a modeler for over 20 years.I went through a few years where I did car models, but my favorite subject has always been airplanes.Mostly WWI and II with some jets thrown in,and as a change of pace sometimes I do an aircraft carrier or sub.
I'm also a history buff and collect history and aviation related books, magazines and documentaries.
Nice to find this place!

50th Armor Division, by any chance? I served in the 104 Engineers but did my ATs with 102d Armor out of Teaneck.

Welcome aboard Tom,
you wouldn't know that amazing talented Steve Willoughby would you?.... :-) :-)
Robin, small world, I use to have just about all the houses across the street from the Teaneck Armory as customers back when I was in the heating business. (at least the ones that used oil.... :-) ) They were the old officers quarters during the war. There was also a section of Dumont up the road, that were all base housing from the old camp Dumont.

Dave you old salt how the hell are you. I have heard tell of that Stephen guy as a matter of fact he owes me money.
Rob I was 50th until it was disbanded and then we became part of the 42nd ID. I was in B 1/102, D 5/102, and finished in A 2/102. I did 17 or 18 ATs in Fort Drum.
Fred I saw the Lee article and I think if its rust it's over done. I didn't want to rag on a fellow builder but armor plate doesn't rust like that, that quickly. Light metal fenders and boxes if not maintained may rust or nuts and bolts and the track but not the main plate it has at least 2 coats of paint on it, primer plus a top coat. Weapons if wet will rust quickly if not constantly maintained.

Only did two ATs at Drum, 84 & 85, before I entered active duty as a lieutenant in 1987. I went to basic training in 83 and missed AT. As a major, I did a couple of AT evaluations at Drum while I was stationed at Dix from 99-00. I did one in 99 and another in 2000. IIRC I think I did the 342 FSB in 2000, don't recall who I did in 1999.

I was up there those years on M48s. I joined the Guard in 82. I did 4 years active Army 1977 to 1981. 2 years with the 11th ACR driveng a tank in Germany. Isn't amazing how Drum got built up from the pre 10th Mountain days. Watertown was still pretty run down though. My last AT was Aug 2001, with a TTXII which was a blast. One of the best and worst ATs I had. I retired in 2003 after news we were losing tanks. No tanks no thanks.

Yes, it was quite a leap from Drum circa 1985 to Drum circa 1999. I commanded an M48A5 the summer of 1985 with the 102d to make up for my AT I missed because I went to ROTC advance camp at Bragg earlier that year. I remember the little dive topless bar right outside a gate from the old Drum. New Ft. Drum is quite a place.

That bar had the ugliest girls I ever saw. I remember one with a C-section scar UGH. Do you remember which battalion and company you were with? 85 I was in B co. 1/102nd out of Bound Brook Armory. Bn HQ was in Phillipsburg. Ever cross Hunters Creek? Last time I was up there we couldn't ford it any more due to the environment damn treehuggers.

I belonged to the combat engineer company that was located in Vermont (D Co., 104th EN) and supported the 86th Bde that was part of the 50th. The only reason I did AT with the tank battalion from NJ was because I had been branched armor and the two tank battalions (1-172, 2-172) from the VT ARNG had already done AT.

I went up to Drum as a TCE for the Vermont tankers in 99 or 2000. They were shooting table VIII on weekends. It was on the new improved range 23-14, 4 lanes and a 6 story range tower. It was a lot of fun. I'm building a 48A5 right now for an old TC friend of mine using the Academy kit. I also converted a 1/18th scale M48A3 to a 48A5 for my old 1st SGT.

Rob how many posts do you need to get some rank. I haven't been a PVT for a long time? :-)

Welcome to Armorama. Looks like you've settled in already! You'll make a great addition.
As for the rank, I believe it kicks in at 50 posts. Then you'll be a PV2! There are many different rank types and schemes but they all work pretty much the same.
Welcome again and if you like us enough, take a look at the A-Guard.

:-) You certainly haven't been to some of the bars I've been to Tom. But after several weeks at sea, Yoda would look good !!! :-)
Hopefully Steve will also sign up. I've already promised--- errrrr make that threatened Martin and Big Bill to make it down for a meeting when I get a Friday night off that's the same night as the IPMS meeting. My Friday's are normally spent working, as Friday is the beginning of my work week.
