I read an AP report in my local paper yesterday that Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg are planning on making a big screen adaptation of "Flags of Our Fathers." If this is true, those two Hollywood heavyweights should be able to do justice to the book and the battle of Iwo Jima. I certainly hope this is true and that they do.

Hmmm... interesting. I've heard for a couple years now that Tom Hanks and Spielberg have been planing a "Band of Brothers" type of film but set in the Pacific. I wonder if this is along the same lines or a different project all together.

YES!!!!!!

I'm excited to hear big guns are looking to make this into a movie, these guys can do the movie justice. I've been rather disappointed that Iwo (pretty much the whole PTO) has gotten little play in movies, especially movies done right like BoB and SPR were done. Iwo was an especially brutal battle and while everyone knows the famous photo it gave the world, few people know the story of the battle and even fewer of the story behind the photo (obviously aside from those who read the book).

I can't wait for this movie, it's long overdue. No offense to The Duke, I loved Sand of Iwo Jima (and ALL of his movies) as much as anyone but it didn't do the battle any justice other than having some of the men who raised the flag in the movie.

I SPR like movie on the Pacific is LONG overdue. Many of the battles were brutal slug-fests "where uncommon valor was a common virtue" - Nimitz.

As far as subjects for future WWII movies how about:

Battle of the Bulge
Anzio
Monte Casino
Falaise Gap
Hurtgen Forest
Liberation of the Death Camps

Kursk - With CG tanks galore.

Chosin Reservoir

Just a thought…

If Clint can keep Spielberg from turning it into an overly preachy heavy-handed piece of dreck like SPR, I'll lay down my 8 shekels to see it!

btw- Frank, the Chosin Reservior breakout was Korean War, Not WWII...

I heard about a year ago he was going to try to do Flags of our Fathers, but had trouble getting permission to shoot it on the actual island. I heard he was going to do it with Hanks though, not Eastwood. I hope he gets to do this movie. I really liked the book. Of course if he does that BoB thing, he might scrap the Iwo movie and just do an Iwo battle in the new BoB. Either way is fine with me

Man! Have I been waiting for something like this! Hope the Scuttlebut is sound. "The Thin Red Line" had the right location, but the wrong outfit. (The Army gets theirs!) Let's see the Marines fighting in the Pacific, with the same caliber film making as in "Saving Private Ryan". This would do justice to the WWII Marine vets who deserve a GREAT flick, and are really up in their in years, by the way. I pray to God that it is done right! Some of what that means to me is an unapologetic historical background, a solid portrayal of the Esprit de Corps of the combatants, and accuracy of uniforms, equipment, and location. Throw in a couple of hundred million and a great actor or two who won't distract us. You know, forget about N. Cage and J. Travolta. Somehow, Tom Hanks could probably pull it off. Oh, and keep that artsyfartsy trash out of it - leave out the lizards, butterflies, and singing Native kids. Well, alot to chew on here, if you stayed with me, Semper Fi to the gyrenes, and warm regards to everyone. I have a fairly big butt, so chew if you like, no hard feelings!

I agree. I'd like them to give it a good going over like SPR but even more than that, especially when they get on the island. It needs to be big, to show how large a landing force invaded such a tiny island and at the same time it needs to get that claustrophic, chaotic feeling of combat that SPR got through pretty good in the opening and final battle scenes.

Yea, Windtalkers was a good movie, just not a great movie like SPR and BoB. It was still a bit too hollywood but an enjoyable movie still. Hope the Marines can get a good treatment in this new movie.

Das Boot is a tremendous movie and a must-see IMO if you want to catch a look from the German side. Stalingrad is also another good movie from the German side, those are two I can think of and recommend off the top of my head.

Windtalkers was close for me. I appreciate the code talkers and all they accomplished. I just want a movie focused on a regular grunt Marine rifle squad. An unusual mission would be OK, since we still have to have a movie. And somehow, Tom Hanks in SPR really upstaged N. Cage in Windtalkers, in my opinion.

You have to remember who makes most of the movies, Hollywood. I understand that even Dos Boot had to be made outside Hollywood because they wanted the typical machine gunning survivors scene.

It will require Germany to get over any stigma they might still have about WWII and to get their movie industry up to what it was pre war.

Don't feel too bad for the Germans. If they can't watch too many movies about their exploits in the war they can always build one of the umpteen million panzer kits out there.
