It was originally a T-55 or T-62, captured by Israel and converted to carry a 105mm M68 tank cannon, like that on the M-60 series tanks. I can't recall as it's been a several years since I saw the film. I am thinking it was a 55, as it had the coaxial MG on the left side of the turret, the T62 had the MG opposite.. From what I remember hearing about it, it was filmed in the desert of southern Israel, with the Israeli Army's cooperation.

The tanks were T-55s modified by Israel.
Look here:
Definite T-55 turret.

Here you'll see it's a T-55 with the turret turned to the rear.

I believe the official designation was Ti-67.

The tanks in The Beast were Ti-67s. Captured by Israel, they were rearmed with 105mm L7/M68 guns and used in IDF service. For the movie, .50 M2s were mocked up to resemble Russian 12.7mm machine guns.

In the opening scene where the Russian tanks assault the Afghan village, it appears that at least some of the tanks are actually firing their main guns. Instead of the normal "Hollywood shot" of flame erupting from the muzzle with no recoil of the cannon, the guns on the tanks in the film do recoil. Also, the firing causes the telltale concussion familar to anyone who's ever seen actual live fire from tanks. The only mystery is the lack of a tracer on the projectile (assuming there is a projectile).
